Vodafone Idea (Vi) is once again grabbing attention in the telecom sector, and this time the news is largely positive. After years of dealing with heavy debt and regulatory pressure, the company may finally be seeing some relief.
From a possible cut in government dues to fresh investments in 5G services, several developments suggest that Vi is trying to get back on track. Here’s a simple breakdown of what’s happening.
Big Boost: Possible 60–65% Cut in License Fee Dues
The biggest update for Vi comes from a review by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). According to reports, the company’s license fee liability may be reduced by around 60–65%.
The Relief:
This reassessment could reduce the company’s dues under Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) by nearly ₹27,000 crore.
More Time to Repay:
The government has already offered some breathing space by freezing interest on these dues until December 31, 2025. The repayment schedule has also been stretched until 2041, making it easier for the company to manage its finances.
For Vi, this relief is extremely important. Lower payments in the short term allow the company to focus on improving its network rather than just paying down debt.
Vi Finally Moves Ahead With 5G
While competitors like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are already ahead in the 5G race, Vi is now gradually expanding its own services.
The telecom operator has started the next phase of its 5G rollout, and the service is currently available in 29 cities.
New Launch in Amritsar:
Recently, Vi launched 5G services near the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The aim is to provide fast internet connectivity to the over 1.5 lakh visitors who come to the temple every day.
Investment Plan:
Over the next three years, the company plans to invest about ₹45,000 crore to strengthen its 4G network and expand 5G coverage across India.
AI Features and New Services for Users
Vi is also focusing on improving the experience for its users with the help of new technology.
Vi Protect:
This AI-based feature helps detect spam and scam calls. According to the company, it has already identified more than 250 crore suspicious calls and messages.
International Call Name Display:
Vi has also introduced International Call Display (CNAP), a feature that shows the name of the caller even if the international number is not saved in your contacts. This is aimed at reducing fraud and improving transparency.
Stock Market Reaction
The positive news around dues relief had an immediate effect on the stock market. Shares of Vodafone Idea jumped nearly 4% in one trading session, touching about ₹10.35.
However, analysts remain cautious.
Global brokerage JPMorgan has kept an “Underweight” rating, saying the company still needs large bank funding to fully support its turnaround plans.
On the other hand, credit rating agency ICRA recently changed the company’s outlook to “Positive”, pointing to better chances of funding and government support.
