The conflict between Iran and Israel has pushed the region into a tense phase, with missile strikes and military threats dominating global headlines. But quietly, something important is happening at the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most crucial shipping routes.
Despite warnings from Iran that ships entering the restricted waterway could face attacks, Indian oil tankers are still managing to pass through.
So why are Indian vessels getting this unusual leeway in such a sensitive region? The answer lies in a mix of diplomacy, trade ties, and long-term strategic interests.
Why India Is a “Special Case” for Iran
India’s position in the current situation is somewhat unique.
Recently, India strengthened its relationship with Israel during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jerusalem, where the two countries highlighted their Special Strategic Partnership.
At the same time, India has also maintained steady ties with Iran over the years. New Delhi has avoided taking a strong side in the conflict and has instead called for calm and dialogue.
This balanced approach appears to be working.
Here are a few reasons why Iran may be allowing Indian ships to continue moving through the strait.
Strong Energy Ties
India is one of the world’s largest buyers of crude oil, and the Middle East remains a key supplier.
Even though India now imports oil from several countries, the region is still critical for its energy needs. For Iran, maintaining a working relationship with a major economy like India makes economic and diplomatic sense.
The Importance of Chabahar Port
India has invested heavily in developing the Chabahar Port in Iran.
The port helps Iran connect with Central Asia and also gives India an important trade route that bypasses regional bottlenecks. Because of this partnership, both countries have a lot at stake in keeping the relationship stable.
India’s Neutral Stand
Another factor is India’s careful diplomatic approach.
Instead of openly supporting either Iran or Israel in the conflict, India has focused on calling for stability and peaceful dialogue. This neutral stance helps New Delhi maintain working ties with both sides.
Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters So Much
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important oil routes in the world. A large portion of global oil shipments passes through this narrow stretch of water.
For India, it is especially crucial:
- Around 50% of India’s crude oil imports pass through this route
- The strait is only about 33 km wide at its narrowest point
- India currently has about 25 days of oil stored in its strategic reserves
If shipping through the Strait is disrupted, it can quickly affect global oil prices and currencies.
Tankers Are Moving, But Slowly
Even though Indian ships are still crossing the route, things are far from normal.
Some Indian seafarers have reported delays in Sharjah and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where ships have been waiting for days for security clearance before entering sensitive waters.
Officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs are reportedly maintaining close contact with Iranian authorities to ensure that Indian ships and crews are clearly identified and not inadvertently involved in any military activity.
What It Could Mean for Fuel Prices in India
For now, Indian consumers may not see an immediate jump in petrol or diesel prices.
As long as Indian tankers continue to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, supplies to refineries in cities like Mumbai and Jamnagar should remain stable.
However, there is one concern. Shipping companies are now paying much higher insurance costs to send tankers through a conflict zone. These higher transport costs can eventually push up fuel prices.
For now, India’s careful diplomacy seems to be helping keep the oil flowing. But with tensions still high in the region, the situation could change quickly.
